The artist's creative process and terms for custom portraits

The Artist is delighted to bring the Client's vision to life through a custom watercolour portrait. To ensure a smooth creative journey and a beautiful final result, the following guidelines apply to all commissions.

Hand painted, personal and unique

Portraits generally take about 2–4 weeks to paint, depending on Jen's commission schedule, the number of subjects and the size chosen. The size refers to the paper size; the painted image sits slightly smaller within it. Each artwork is carefully packaged with matboard and backing. Due to the nature of watercolour, some warping of the paper is natural. Jen minimises this with careful water control, but it may not always be eliminated. All artwork is signed and comes with a certificate of authenticity.

1. Securing a Commission

To officially reserve a spot on the Artist's calendar, payment is required in full at the time of booking. Once painting has begun, no refund is available, as supplies and time have already been committed to the piece. This allows the Artist to manage their schedule effectively and dedicate the necessary time, materials and care to each unique piece.

2. Reference Materials & Quality

The beauty of a watercolour portrait depends greatly on the quality of the reference photos provided.

  • The Client is asked to provide clear, high-resolution images.
  • Right of Refusal: To ensure the highest quality work, the Artist reserves the right to request alternative photos or decline a commission if the provided materials lack the detail or lighting necessary for a successful painting.

3. Copyright & Artistic Promotion

To ensure a smooth creative process, the Client agrees to provide reference materials that are either their own original property or used with explicit permission from the copyright holder. The Artist relies on these materials to bring the vision to life, and therefore, the Client assumes full responsibility for ensuring any provided images do not infringe upon the intellectual property rights of third parties.

The Artist retains the copyright to all created artwork, including the right to share the creative process and the finished piece for promotional purposes (such as social media portfolios or website displays).

  • Commercial Use: The Artist will always seek the Client's explicit permission before using a specific portrait for commercial merchandising (such as selling prints or products featuring the likeness to third parties).

4. Privacy & Social Media Opt-Out

The Artist values the Client's privacy. If the Client prefers that the artwork not be shared on social media or used in promotional materials, they may opt out at the time of booking or before the work begins. The Artist will explicitly confirm this at the time of booking.

5. Final Sales & Refunds

Due to the bespoke, hand-painted nature of these portraits:

  • Refunds are not provided once a work has been completed and delivered.
  • The Artist aims to provide updates during the process to show the direction of the piece. Minor revisions can be discussed and accepted based on the technical feasibility to amend.

6. Delivery

Timeline estimates are provided at the time of booking but are subject to change based on the complexity of the piece. The Artist is not responsible for delays caused by shipping carriers once the item has left the studio.
